A gunman who opened fire Monday night into a group of people in Inglewood struck a teenage boy who police say was not the intended target.

The shooting took place about 6:42 p.m. when a person fired multiple rounds in the 3200 block of West 112th Street, Inglewood Police Department Sgt. Meeks said.

It was unclear if the teen was standing with the group or was outside another home in the residential area when he was shot.

The boy was struck in the lower body and taken to a local hospital, where he is listed in stable condition, Meeks said.

Authorities initially said the boy was 13 years old but later could not confirm the victim's age.

Investigators do not believe the shooting was random but said the victim was not the intended target.

No other injuries were reported, Meeks said.

The gunman fled from the scene on foot after the shooting.

Police Tuesday morning served a search warrant at the home of a person of interest near where the shooting took place.

Authorities said the area is known for gang activity, but it was still unclear if this shooting was gang related.

Police were talking to witnesses in hopes of getting a description of the gunman.

Man Killed, 2 Others Wounded in Separate Inglewood Shooting

About an hour earlier, another shooting in Inglewood left one man dead and two others wounded.

Officers arriving in the 900 block of West Beach Avenue discovered the three victims had been standing out on the sidewalk when they were struck by gunfire, the LAPD stated in a news release.

All three were taken to a local hospital, where one of the victim's was pronounced dead.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Inglewood Police Department at 310-412-5246.

A two-year investigation of an Inglewood drug operation led to the arrest of 10 people linked to the Osage Legend Crips, authorities announced Wednesday. Three men and one woman involved remained at large, according to the FBI.

The Osage Legend Crips allegedly ran the Stop and Shop Market in a strip mall on South Prairie Avenue, the Department of Justice said.

Andre Bailey and Delshawn Johnson are seen in photos provided by the FBI on Aug. 29, 2018.

While the shop looked like a convenience store, the group and its associates cooked and packaged cocaine inside then distributed them by driving around Inglewood and delivering them in various locations, including the local U.S. VETS and Social Security offices, the DOJ said.

According to the indictment, the group “discussed attempting to make the shop look like an actual retail store and getting window signs to tell drug customers and co-conspirators when to avoid going into the shop.”

A total of 15 people were indicted in the case, officials said. Ten of them were arrested on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning:

  • Glen Dwight Love, known as “Big Luck,” 46, of Pasadena
  • Deshay Lewann King, known as “Shay Bone,” 45, of South L.A.
  • Raythel Brown Jr., known as "PD Wace," 39
  • Clyde Ervin Love Jr., known as "F-Bone," 43
  • Deshan Love, known as "S-Boy," 42
  • Joshua Brown, known as "Lil Shay Bone," 22
  • Tyler Deron Scott, known as "Tweet," 36
  • Nathan Washington, known as "Big Hustle," 40
  • Roderick Agee, known as "Lurch," 24
  • Clifton Ross, known as "C-Boy," 39

The DOJ said authorities continued to look for the following individuals:

  • Andre Bailey, known as "Face," 43
  • Steven Edwards, known as "Squeeze," 20
  • Delshawn Johnson, known as "Baby C Rag," 41
  • Carnisha Connors, known as "CC," 29

Wiley Venoy Ivory II, a 38-year-old Inglewood resident also known as “Slim,” had already been in state custody on unrelated charges, according to the DOJ. He ran the Stop and Shop Market with Love and King, investigators added.

Steven Edwards and Carnisha Connors are seen in photos provided by the FBI on Aug. 29, 2018.

The joint investigation by the FBI and Inglewood police started in July 2016 following a spike in violence involving the Osage Legend Crips and its rival, Inglewood Family Gangster Bloods, according to authorities.

"Through their alliance with the larger neighborhood Crips gangs, the OLC increased access to guns and drugs and has evolved from a local street gang, which has plagued Inglewood for 20 years, to a larger criminal enterprise," said Paul Delacourt, assistant director of the FBI’s L.A. field office.

Some 200 officers worked on the case, Delacourt added. Officials also reported finding 16 firearms and more than 100 rounds of ammunition during the bust.

Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr. spoke at the announcement of the arrests at a news conference on Wednesday.

“This is a great day for our city," he said.

Thirteen people linked to the Inglewood Family street gang have been arrested and indicted on federal drugs and firearms charges, authorities said Wednesday.

Inglewood Mayor James Butts made the announcement at a joint news conference with the FBI and Inglewood police Chief Mark Fronterotta, just two months after declaring the arrest of 10 other individuals associated with another gang, the Osage Legend Crips.

The Osage Legend Crips allegedly cooked and packaged cocaine at an Inglewood shop disguised as a convenience store.

Like the Osage Legend Crips, the Inglewood Family gang also grew from a local street group to a national criminal enterprise, officials said. The latter has known cliques in New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Oklahoma, Missouri, North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, according to the FBI.

The FBI provided this image of weapons the agency said were seized during a gang member's arrest on Oct. 30, 2018.

The FBI provided this image of weapons the agency said were seized during a gang member's arrest on Oct. 30, 2018.

Members and associates were accused of participating in violent crimes while trafficking firearms and drugs, including powder and crack cocaine and methamphetamine.

Seven of them were arrested on Tuesday, most of them in or around Inglewood, said Paul Delacourt, assistant director of the FBI's L.A. field office. Officials said they also seized weapons during one of those arrests.

One was detained on Monday and four others in 2017, Delacourt added. Another individual was in the process of being transferred from state custody to federal custody, the official said.

The FBI provided the following list of defendants and the charges they're facing:

  • Byron Sumlin, 45, of Gramercy Park in Los Angeles, was charged with unlawfully engaging in the business of dealing in firearms without a license.
  • Jason Inge, aka “J-Rush,” 31, of Inglewood, was charged with cocaine distribution and aiding and abetting, as well as possession of firearms and ammunition as a felon. He was arrested in Atlanta on Tuesday, officials said.
  • Terrence Hale, 51, of Gardena, was charged with cocaine and methamphetamine distribution and aiding and abetting.
  • Ralph Adrian Williams, 33, of Long Beach, was charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition as a felon.
  • Hafoka Netane, 33, of Hawthorne, was charged with cocaine distribution and aiding and abetting.
  • Ronald Anthony Miller,  29, of Inglewood, was charged with cocaine distribution and aiding and abetting.
  • Agyei Hasani Covington, 39, of Inglewood, was charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine; distribution of methamphetamine, and aiding and abetting.
  • Justin Jackson, 23, of Gardena, was charged with possession of a firearm as a felon.
  • Charles Armstead, 37, of San Bernardino, was charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine; distribution of methamphetamine and aiding and abetting.
  • Victoria Sanders, 50, of Inglewood, was charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine; distribution of controlled substances and aiding and abetting.
  • Eddie Lee Jackson, aka “Coco,” 54, of Inglewood, was charged with distribution of cocaine base in the form of crack cocaine.
  • Derick Butler, 31, of Inglewood, was charged with possession of firearms as a felon.
  • Chad Jones, 28, of Inglewood, was charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine; distribution of controlled substances and aiding and abetting.

A 14th individual, Dayquan Travion Ware, a 28-year-old L.A. resident, did not face federal charges but was detained for violating his probation, the FBI said.

At Wednesday's news conference, Butts denied the recent arrest had anything to do with the construction of a new NFL stadium in the city.

The mayor said it's the eighth consecutive year that Inglewood saw the lowest crime rates in its history, and that officials were merely continuing that trend. He added that criminal activities in the city have dropped 70 percent since they peaked in 1981.

"We’re putting every criminal gang member on notice, that these operations will continue until every one of you is either incarcerated or leaves the city of Inglewood," Butts said.

A bomb squad detonated a suspicious device Monday morning that had been attached to the trunk of a car left near a school in Inglewood.

Police were flagged down about 9:30 p.m. Sunday by a woman who noticed a package and several dangling wires attached to a 2004 Nissan parked in the 700 block of West Beach Avenue, Inglewood Police Department Lt. Cochran said.

A bomb dog sent to the scene alerted on the package, prompting authorities to believe that it was a live explosive, Cochran said.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department bomb squad arrived and safely detonated the device, which was later determined not to be functional.

About 75 to 100 residents had to evacuate the densely populated area during the incident.

Investigators said the vehicle was not stolen and that they were trying to track down its owner.

It was unclear how long the car had been at the location in front of Highland Elementary School.

A resident who was evacuated due to the investigation said he was surprised when he heard about the suspicious device.

“All over the world you can hear stuff going on but you don’t expect it to happen in your neighborhood or on your block, but it does,” Paul Ahmad said.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Sheriff's Department at 323-881-7500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

Some California Police Agencies Shredding Internal Affairs Documents, Police Unions Preparing for Legal Battles

Just as a landmark police transparency law is going into effect, some California police agencies are shredding internal affairs documents and law enforcement unions are rushing to block the information from being released.

The new law, which begins to unwind California’s strictest-in-the-nation protections over the secrecy of law enforcement records, opens to the public internal investigations of officer shootings and other major uses of force, along with confirmed cases of sexual assault and lying while on duty. But the lawsuits and records destruction, which began even before the law took effect Jan. 1, could tie up the release of information for months or years, and in some instances, prevent it from ever being disclosed.

“The fact that police unions are challenging this law is on some level not surprising,” said Peter Bibring, director of police practices at the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, one of the principal supporters of the new law. “They have a long history of fighting tooth and nail against transparency.”

Before this year, the public couldn’t access police disciplinary records outside of a courtroom. The same prohibitions, which were first put into place four decades ago after a push from police unions, applied to prosecutors as well. California was the only state in the nation where that was the case.

A man and woman accused in the fatal shooting of a 70-year-old Inglewood woman on Christmas Day were arrested in west Texas on Friday, a week after they were able to evade capture in Arizona, police said.

Donovan Bingaman, 20, and Lizet Martinez, 29, were taken into custody on warrants by authorities in Odessa, Inglewood police said in a brief statement. No further details were available on the circumstances of their arrest.

They were wanted in connection with the Dec. 25 death of Lourdes Padilla, who was shot during a struggle with a female purse-snatcher near the corner of Yukon Avenue and 104th Street, according to investigators.

Padilla was critically injured and taken to the hospital, where she died two days later.

The attacker had escaped the scene in a black, four-door 2019 Toyota Yaris or Scion iA with paper plates and a male getaway driver, police said.

Detectives first publicly identified the suspects last week, after they were spotted by law enforcement in Casa Grande, Arizona.

The pair was in a white Nissan Versa with paper plates, and although they initially stopped when authorities pulled them over, they soon sped away, officials said.

The suspects led police on a pursuit and were eventually able to escape the area.

Eight days later, they were found and arrested in Odessa. Officials have not said how they were able to locate them.

Investigators have filed the case with prosecutors at the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

A DUI suspect who was being followed by Inglewood police died in a crash shortly after the officers lost sight of the vehicle early Saturday.

The Police Department said at around 2:10 a.m., officers started following a gray Dodge Charger erratically speeding northbound on Dalerose Avenue near 111th Street.

They tried to catch up to the Charger but lost sight of it near Century Boulevard, police said.

Dispatch then received a call at 2:20 a.m. about an overturned vehicle nearby at 1230 S. Rosewood Ave., according to police. Officers responded and discovered the gray Dodge Charger that was being followed earlier, Inglewood police said.

The motorist, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene by the L.A. County Fire Department.

Footage from the site shows one car that had landed on its side. What appears to be a PT Cruiser is also seen on the sidewalk mangled on the driver’s side. Police did not release information about any other possible injuries or damages in the incident.

Lt. Louie Johnson of Inglewood police said contrary to earlier reports, the driver was not decapitated.

Officials provided no further information.

Man Arrested in 1990 Kidnapping, Killing of 11-Year-Old Inglewood Boy

A man was arrested in the 1990 kidnapping and killing of an 11-year-old Inglewood boy, Inglewood Police Department said in a news release Tuesday.

Eleven-year-old William Tillett was kidnapped while walking home from school in the area of Imperial Highway and Crenshaw Boulevard in Inglewood at around 3:00 p.m. May 24, 1990. The child was later found dead in a residential neighborhood in the City of Hawthorne, according to police.

Almost 29 years later, Edward Donell Thomas, 50, of Pomona was arrested on February 14 and charged with murder, Inglewood Police said.

It is unclear what led investigators to identify Thomas as a suspect.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office filed the case as a special circumstances murder and a “felon in possession of a firearm” Tuesday.

An Inglewood Police Department news release said Thomas was being held at an Inglewood jail on no bail. Public arrest records showed that the suspect’s bail was set at $3,000,000.

A man faces the death penalty for the kidnapping and killing of an 11-year-old Inglewood boy nearly 30 years ago, and authorities revealed Wednesday that they believe the suspect did not act alone.

William Tillett, 11, (left) and Edward Donell Thomas, 50, (right) appear in photos provided by the Inglewood Police Department on Feb. 19, 2019.

William Tillett, 11, (left) and Edward Donell Thomas, 50, (right) appear in photos provided by the Inglewood Police Department on Feb. 19, 2019.

Edward Donell Thomas, 50, was arrested on Feb. 14 at his home in Pomona in connection with the disappearance of William Tillett.

Thomas faces a murder charge, along with a special allegation of kidnapping and lying in wait. The charges make him eligible for the death penalty, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday. Thomas was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, but Inglewood police did not elaborate on what he was on parole for.

William was walking home from Kew Elementary School in Inglewood on May 24, 1990 with a group of friends. He said goodbye about six blocks from his home when he was taken, according to the Los Angeles Times.

His family and friends never heard from him again.

William’s parents reported him missing after they returned home from work and he was not there, according to the Times.

About six hours later, William’s body was found in a Hawthorne carport, officials said. Though there were no signs of trauma on his body, his wrists showed evidence that he had been bound. It was later determined that he had been strangled, the Times reported.

It is unclear what led to Thomas’ arrest nearly 30 years later, but authorities said “advanced technology” played a role. Police also refrained from saying if there was any connection between the victim and suspect, and what the motive behind the crime was.

Thomas faces death or life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted as charged.

Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta said during a news conference Wednesday that investigators believe Thomas did not act alone, but did he not elaborate on why they believe that.

Inglewood Mayor James Butts, who was deputy chief of police at the time William disappeared, said the crime affected the people of Inglewood.

“To this day, when that name was said, it resonated me,” Butts said. “It affected this entire community that way.”

William’s brother, Herbert Tillett thanked Inglewood police investigators for their work on the case and for the arrest. He is hoping for closure.

“With us being so close, I just want to keep the momentum going and I just want to plead with the community to just come forward,” Herbert Tillett said. “If anything jogs your mental rolodex from three decades ago, please contact (police).”

Inglewood police continue to investigate the crime, and anyone with information can call homicide detectives at 310-412-5246.

Many questions remain after a sword-wielding suspect was fatally shot by police and two officers were hit by gunfire during an encounter at a Church of Scientology in Inglewood Wednesday afternoon.

The deadly incident was reported about 3:30 p.m. when the suspect pulled up to the church at 315 Market St. in a Bentley. Armed with what was described as a samurai sword, he went inside as church services were going on.

The suspect was wearing a hoodie and a mask, and had the sword strapped to his back when he walked in, Luiz Gonzalez, humanitarian program director at the church told KTLA on Thursday. The suspect started threatening parishioners.

One Inglewood police officer responded to the scene first before being joined by a second and they confronted the suspect in the lobby, Lt. Oscar Mejia told reporters Wednesday.

It is unclear exactly what happened before the shooting occurred, but the suspect was struck and critically injured by police gunfire in the lobby of the building. The officers were also shot, one in the hand and one in the arm, police said.

In a statement Wednesday night, the Church of Scientology thanked the Inglewood Police Department for their "rapid response."

"These officers are doing a heroic job protecting the community and keeping houses of worship safe against hate crimes," the statement read. "We have offered our full support to the authorities who are investigating this incident."

Police have not released a possible motive behind the incident.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he eventually died, Mejia said. He has not been identified and was only described as an Asian male. Investigators are looking into whether he had any ties to the church, but Gonzalez said the suspect was not a parishioner there.

The officers suffered minor injuries and were also taken to the same hospital.

It is unknown if the suspect was also armed with a gun, therefore it is unclear how the officers were shot. Police are looking into the possibility that the officers might have been hit by friendly fire, or that bullets ricocheted.

Numerous people were inside the church when the shooting occurred, Mejia said, and they were being interviewed. In addition, investigators were reviewing video to try and piece together what occurred.
